  • Glacial Termination II was marked by a rise in atmospheric CO2 concentrations and global temperature. An analysis of air bubbles from an Antarctic ice core suggests that during the first phase of deglaciation, Antarctic temperature and atmospheric CO2 concentrations increased together, whereas CO2 lagged behind temperature rise during the second phase.

  • Reconstruction of the Eemian interglacial from the new NEEM ice core shows that in spite of a climate warmer by eight degrees Celsius in Northern Greenland than that of the past millennium, the ice here was only a few hundred metres lower than its present level.

  • Argon and luminescence dating of fossil shell infills from Trinil in Java, where Homo erectus lived, reveals that the hominin-bearing deposits are younger than previously thought; perforated shells, a shell tool and an engraved shell indicate that Homo erectus ate freshwater mussels, used their shells as tools and was able to create abstract engravings.
