Multiple system atrophy—new insight from prospective studies

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) carries a universally poor prognosis, but the natural history of the disease is not well established. A new study prospectively followed a cohort of patients with MSA across multiple centres in the USA. The results provide valuable insight into progression and survival in patients with MSA.

Lugdunin amplifies innate immune responses in the skin in synergy with host- and microbiota-derived factors

Lugdunin is a peptide antibiotic produced by the skin commensal Staphylococcus lugdunensis. Here, the authors show that lugdunin reduces Staphylococcus aureus colonization in human keratinocytes and mouse skin by inducing the expression of human LL-37 and recruitment of monocytes and neutrophils.

The Parkinson disease connectome — insights from new imaging studies

During Parkinson disease progression, the accumulation of α-synuclein pathology is paralleled by changes in structural and functional connectivity in the brain. Two new studies pinpoint specific alterations in the brain connectome in the early stages of Parkinson disease and suggest future avenues of research to develop connectome-based biomarkers.
