Ribosome biogenesis is influenced by the rate of RNAPI progression. Yet, mechanisms that control RNAPI elongation have remained elusive. Here, the authors show that the conserved protein Seb1 promotes cotranscriptional rRNA processing by controlling RNAPI progression.

SSUP-72/PINN-1 coordinates RNA-polymerase II 3′ pausing and developmental gene expression in C. elegans

Here they show that SSUP-72/PINN-1 regulates Pol II 3′ pausing and transcription termination in C. elegans. Its loss bypasses the need for CDK-12 during development, uncovering a novel mechanism that coordinates operonic gene expression and ensures proper growth.

The RNA exosome promotes transcription termination of backtracked RNA polymerase II

New in vivo analyses in Schizosaccharomyces pombe suggest that the RNA exosome promotes transcription termination by targeting the 3' end of nascent transcripts associated with 'backtracked' RNA polymerase II, revealing a new link between mRNA surveillance and termination.

Common mechanism of transcription termination at coding and noncoding RNA genes in fission yeast

Termination of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) transcription is an essential step of gene expression. Here the authors provide evidence that in fission yeast termination of ncRNA genes occurs by a cleavage-dependent mechanism involving recruitment of mRNA 3′ end processing factors and requires the conserved Ysh1/CPSF-73 and Dhp1/XRN2 nucleases.

Chromatin remodeling by Pol II primes efficient Pol III transcription

Transcription of RNA polymerase II is coupled with remodeling of chromatin. This study reports that transcription of RNA polymerase II is also required to prime and maintain nucleosome depletion at RNA polymerase III loci.
