Many alloys exhibit discontinuous plastic flow at cryogenic temperatures, and it is important to understand the mechanisms behind this. Here, digital image correlation of a stainless steel reveals serrated plastic flow at cryogenic temperatures, due to the action of slip, changes in texture, twinning, and recrystallization.
