Extreme climate events increase risk of global food insecurity and adaptation needs

The world’s future food security will certainly be affected by extreme climate events, yet the location and magnitude of their impact are often overlooked. Using crop yield and food need projections under different socioeconomic conditions, this study estimates the share of the population at the risk of hunger under high and low greenhouse gas emission scenarios in the face of climate extremes.

Forecasting flowering phenology under climate warming by modelling the regulatory dynamics of flowering-time genes

Climate change and increasing temperature have an impact on the flowering time of plants but models predicting these effects are lacking. Satake et al. provide a model based on differential gene expression to predict the response of plants to warmer temperatures and find that the flowering period is shortened.

Translational genomics of osteoarthritis in 1,962,069 individuals

A genome-wide association study meta-analysis combined with multiomics data of osteoarthritis identifies 700 effector genes as well as biological processes with a convergent involvement of multiple effector genes; 10% of these genes express the target of approved drugs.

Prediction of seasonal climate-induced variations in global food production

Increasing volatility in food markets and the rising incidence of climatic extremes could lead to more frequent spikes in food prices. A global assessment of the reliability of crop simulations in reproducing past failures in major crop types suggests that seasonal forecasts can be useful for monitoring global food production.

Construction and integration of three de novo Japanese human genome assemblies toward a population-specific reference

Human reference genomes are typically constructed from few individuals, and are biased towards European and African genomes. Here, the authors assemble three Japanese genomes to create a population-specific reference genome. They then demonstrate improved variant calling from exome sequencing with this reference genome.

Early developmental stress alters microglial function, linked to schizophrenia and autism. In a mouse model, inflammatory 2HIT stress increased cerebellar microglia and its turnover, causing Purkinje neuron loss and cerebellar dysfunction, which was improved by microglia replacement.
