  • The genomic profiling of tumours has not been widely adopted in the clinic due to technical and practical hurdles. Here, the authors develop PGDx elio tissue complete, a scalable, standardised and FDA-cleared test comprising a targeted gene panel and automated machine-learning analysis, which detects clinically relevant sequence biomarkers in cancer samples.

  • Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum are the pathogenic agents that cause the tropical disease schistosomiasis. Here, and in an accompanying paper, the genomes of these two flatworms are sequenced and analysed. The results provide insights into the molecular architecture and host interactions of the flatworms, as well as avenues for future development of targeted interventions for schistosomiasis.

  • Thomas Nutman and colleagues report the draft genome of the filarial pathogen Loa loa, the African eyeworm. They also report coverage of two other filarial pathogens, Wuchereria bancrofti and Onchocerca volvulus. Unlike most filariae, L. loa lacks an obligate intracellular Wolbachia endosymbiont, and comparative genomic analyses suggest that the L. loa genome does not contain new metabolic synthesis or transport pathways compared to other filariae.
