Characterization of quorum sensing-regulated antibiotic production by Streptococcus salivarus and signal eavesdropping by Streptococcus pyogenes enables engineering of a probiotic strain to prevent pathogen signal eavesdropping and antibiotic degradation, and inhibit colonization.

The leaderless communication peptide (LCP) class of quorum-sensing peptides is broadly distributed among Firmicutes

The human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes secretes a short peptide (LCP) that mediates intercellular communication and controls bacterial virulence. Here, the authors show that LCP homologues act as bacterial intercellular signals and regulate gene expression also in other bacteria.

Integrated analysis of population genomics, transcriptomics and virulence provides novel insights into Streptococcus pyogenes pathogenesis

This study presents the genomes of 2,101 emm28 Streptococcus pyogenes invasive strains, of which 492 were transcriptionally profiled, and 50 were assessed for virulence. GWAS, eQTL analysis, and study of isogenic mutant strains identified an intergenic region that alters global transcript profiles and bacterial virulence.

Environmental pH and peptide signaling control virulence of Streptococcus pyogenes via a quorum-sensing pathway

The mechanism by which environmental pH controls the virulence of the pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes is unclear. Here, Do et al. show that changes in pH affect the activity of the virulence regulator RopB via its interaction with a quorum-sensing peptide signal.
