Hirano et al find that deletion of Lem2 and Lnp1, localised to the nuclear envelope (NE) and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) respectively, causes growth defects in S. pombe that are associated with aberrant expansion of NE/ER membranes and leakage of nuclear proteins. This study sheds light on the involvement of these membrane proteins in the maintenance of the nuclear membrane barrier.
