Genetic diversity of H9N2 avian influenza viruses in poultry across China and implications for zoonotic transmission

The H9N2 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) remain dominant in live poultry markets in China, and H9N2 AIVs with HA-Q226L, PB2-V/K627 and NP-N52 mutations can be transmitted between guinea pigs and between ferrets via direct contact and respiratory droplet.

Dual receptor-binding, infectivity, and transmissibility of an emerging H2N2 low pathogenicity avian influenza virus

IFI16 directly senses viral RNA and enhances RIG-I transcription and activation to restrict influenza virus infection

IFI16 enhances the type I IFN response to inhibit influenza virus replication by two mechanisms: it directly binds viral RNA to promote RIG-I activation and upregulates RIG-I expression via recruiting RNA polymerase II and binding to the RIG-I promoter.

The ubiquitin E3 ligase TRIM31 promotes aggregation and activation of the signaling adaptor MAVS through Lys63-linked polyubiquitination

Sensors of RNA viruses trigger prion-like aggregation of the adaptor MAVS, which leads to antiviral responses. Gao and colleagues show that the E3 ligase TRIM31 positively regulates this process by K63-linked polyubiquitination of MAVS.

Structural basis for preferential avian receptor binding by the human-infecting H10N8 avian influenza virus

Avian strains of the influenza virus sometimes infect human hosts with severe consequences. Here, Wang et al.report that the H10N8 avian influenza virus, for which two lethal human infections have been reported, possesses restricted affinity towards the human receptor and suggest a structural basis for H10N8’s limited virulence.
