A sugar transporter OsSTP28 is identified as a regulator of nitrogen-response tillering and yield formation in rice. Nitrogen supply represses the expression of OsSTP28 to fine turn the level of apoplastic glucose in shoot base, which in turn activates gibberellin catabolism.
