The RNA-binding protein landscapes differ between mammalian organs and cultured cells

Characterization of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) in tissues has been hampered by technical constraints. Here, the authors describe ex vivo eRIC, a method for global profiling of RBPs active in mammalian organs, and report comprehensive RBP atlases from mouse brain, kidney and liver.

Strontium isoscape of sub-Saharan Africa allows tracing origins of victims of the transatlantic slave trade

Strontium isotope analysis can be applied to animal and plant tissues to help determine their provenance. Here, the authors generate a strontium isoscape of sub-Saharan Africa using data from 2266 environmental samples and demonstrate its efficacy by tracing the African roots of individuals from historic slavery contexts.

Methylglyoxal modification of Na_v1.8 facilitates nociceptive neuron firing and causes hyperalgesia in diabetic neuropathy

Glucose and its metabolic derivatives are increased the plasma of patients with diabetes. Peter Nawroth and colleagues demonstrate that one such metabolite, methylglyoxal, is increased in patients with painful diabetic neuropathy, and find that it acts by modifying the excitability characteristics of a sodium channel protein.
