Possible future waves of SARS-CoV-2 infection generated by variants of concern with a range of characteristics

Understanding the potential impacts of new variants of SARS-CoV-2 is important for pandemic planning. Here, the authors develop a model incorporating hypothetical new variants with varying transmissibility and immune evasion properties, and use it to project possible future epidemic waves in the UK.

Effect of energetic ions on edge-localized modes in tokamak plasmas

Edge-localized plasma modes in a tokamak can damage its innermost wall. Simulations now show that fast ions can modify the spatio-temporal structure of these modes. These effects need to be considered in the optimization of control techniques.

The polycystin complex mediates Wnt/Ca²⁺ signalling

Seokho et al. report that Wnt ligands bind the extracellular domain of polycystin 1 (PKD1) and induce Ca²⁺ influx through the Ca²⁺-permeable ion channel TRPP2. This activity is abrogated by PKD1 mutations linked to polycystic kidney disease.
