Identifying therapeutic targets for cancer among 2074 circulating proteins and risk of nine cancers

Circulating proteins are a potential source of cancer biomarkers. Here, the authors assessed 2,074 circulating proteins and used Mendelian randomisation to compare with the risk of 9 common cancer types across multiple GWAS cohorts and identified key considerations with respect to the potential for adverse effects of altering cancer-risk proteins that inform their utility in cancer prevention.

GWAS identifies genetic loci, lifestyle factors and circulating biomarkers that are risk factors for sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease with a strong genetic component. Here, the authors use GWAS to identify 28 loci associated with sarcoidosis and perform downstream analyses linking the disease to immune pathways, BMI and circulating markers.

Phenome-wide Mendelian randomization mapping the influence of the plasma proteome on complex diseases

Mendelian randomization (MR) and colocalization analyses are used to estimate causal effects of 1,002 plasma proteins on 225 phenotypes. Evidence from drug developmental programs shows that target-indication pairs with MR and colocalization support were more likely to be approved, highlighting the value of this approach for prioritizing therapeutic targets.

The neural representation of taste quality at the periphery

Using two-photon microendoscopy and genetically encoded calcium indicators the tuning properties of the first neural station of the gustatory system are explored; results reveal that ganglion neurons are matched to specific taste receptor cells, supporting a labelled line model of information transfer in the taste system.
