  • The Hawaiian–Emperor volcanic chain has a distinctive bend. Geochemical analyses show that lavas erupted on the ocean floor close to the bend formed during deformation of the Pacific Plate, implying the bend was caused by changes in plate motion.

  • Seamount chains in the southeast Atlantic Ocean are thought to have formed above plumes sourced from the deep mantle. Dating of lavas erupted along the trails show that the formation and distribution of the seamount chains is also controlled by the motion and structure of the African Plate.

  • Argon and luminescence dating of fossil shell infills from Trinil in Java, where Homo erectus lived, reveals that the hominin-bearing deposits are younger than previously thought; perforated shells, a shell tool and an engraved shell indicate that Homo erectus ate freshwater mussels, used their shells as tools and was able to create abstract engravings.
