Disruption of myelin structure and oligodendrocyte maturation in a macaque model of congenital Zika infection

Pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental delays in infants during maternal Zika virus infection is not well understood. Here, the authors show that congenital Zika virus infection in macaques disrupts fetal neurodevelopment through myelin decompaction and suppression of myelin gene expression.

Cytomegalovirus vaccine vector-induced effector memory CD4 + T cells protect cynomolgus macaques from lethal aerosolized heterologous avian influenza challenge

Influenza genetic diversity is a key challenge in the design of a universal influenza vaccine that protects against different strains of influenza virus. Here, Malouli and colleagues demonstrate use of a cytomegalovirus-based T cell vaccine that induces immunity and can protect macaques from lethal avian influenza challenge with heterologous strains of influenza and suggest protection is linked to the generation of lung-resident influenza-specific CD4⁺ T cells.

The immune response to Zika virus is required to curtail the infection and avoid immunopathology, but may be involved in the associated pathophysiology. Fetal brain lesions after subcutaneous inoculation of Zika virus in a pregnant nonhuman primate

New animal models of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection are imperative to accelerating efforts to treat or prevent disease in humans. Adams Waldorf et al. now report that ZIKV infection of a pregnant female pigtailed macaque caused brain lesions in the developing fetus, suggesting that this model may be useful for understanding ZIKV-associated congenital abnormalities in humans.

ZIKV can infect human term placentas in the absence of maternal factors

Villazana-Kretzer et al. compare histology, physiology and gene expression in cotyledons from term placentas perfused with either active or UV-inactivated Zika virus. They show that ZIKV can infect human term placentas in the absence of maternal factors and identify unique transcriptional responses to active ZIKA virus.
