Inter-basin contrast in the Southern Ocean warming

This work highlights a sharp warming contrast within the Southern Ocean: the Atlantic-Indian sector warms faster than the Pacific due to wind-driven heat transport. The contrast is projected to persist, shaping future climate and ocean change.

Augmented microglial endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria contacts mediate depression-like behavior in mice induced by chronic social defeat stress

Malfunctioning of cellular organelles, such as the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria, can have a role in stress-induced pathophysiological changes. Here, the authors show that increased mitochondria‐associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes contacts related to ATP-P2X7 receptor signaling contribute to stress responses in microglia and the development of depression-like behavior in male mice.

Ocean warming and accelerating Southern Ocean zonal flow

The remoteness and paucity of historic observations of the Southern Ocean limit understanding of the effects of climate change on circulation. Using observations, CMIP6 and eddy-resolving models, this Article shows that acceleration of its zonal flow emerged in recent decades as a result of uneven ocean warming.
