Modelling the coherent dynamics of molecular nitrogen ions during strong-field ionisation is challenging as it constitutes an open, many-body quantum system. Here, the continuous injection of ions via the transient strong field is shown to increase the population of excited states, thereby creating the possible population inversion for ion lasing.
