  • TFG-1 is identified as a regulator of COPII coat assembly that interacts with SEC-16 to control protein exit from the endoplasmic reticulum. TFG–kinase fusion proteins have been detected in some cancers and might promote oncogenesis by prematurely phosphorylating target substrates as they exit the endoplasmic reticulum.

  • The discovery is reported of a small molecule drug, GS-5734, which has antiviral activity against Ebola virus and other filoviruses, and is capable of providing post-exposure therapeutic protection against lethal disease in 100% of drug-treated nonhuman primates infected with Ebola virus; the drug targets viral RNA polymerase and can distribute to sanctuary sites (such as testes, eyes and brain), suggesting that it may be able to clear persistent virus infection.

  • A nanopore DNA sequencer is used for real-time genomic surveillance of the Ebola virus epidemic in the field in Guinea; the authors demonstrate that it is possible to pack a genomic surveillance laboratory in a suitcase and transport it to the field for on-site virus sequencing, generating results within 24 hours of sample collection.
