Semiconductor-less vertical transistor with I_ON/I_OFF of 10⁶

In field-effect transistors, a semiconducting channel is indispensable for device switching. Here, the authors demonstrate semiconductor-less switching via modulation of the field emission barrier height across a graphene-hBN interface with ON/OFF ratio of 10⁶.

Maternal vaccination and protective immunity against Zika virus vertical transmission

A Zika virus vaccine should protect the fetus during pregnancy. Here, using a live-attenuated Zika vaccine, the authors show that a higher neutralizing antibody titer is required to protect from in utero transmission than to protect non-pregnant mice and that a single maternal immunization protects the fetus from infection and disease.

Control of electrical resistance and magnetoresistance by electric-field-driven oxygen ion migration in a single GdO_x wire

Electric-field-driven ion migration is an effective way to control many physical properties such as electric and magnetic properties of materials. In this research, we demonstrated that remarkably small electric field as low as 10⁵ V/m can effectively modulate resistance of a GdO_x microwire due to the lateral motion of oxygen ions. This result enables mimicking a synaptic device with low power consumption like as a brain. Furthermore, huge MR modulation of the GdO_x microwire with the electric field provides novel functionality as an electromagnetic device.
