Molecular logic of the Zur-regulated zinc deprivation response in Bacillus subtilis

The transcription factor Zur controls the zinc deprivation response in Bacillus subtilis. Here, Shin and Helmann show that Zur-regulated genes are derepressed in three waves in response to zinc deprivation, and this is linked to the biochemistry of zinc sensing by Zur.

Lrig1-expression confers suppressive function to CD4⁺ cells and is essential for averting autoimmunity via the Smad2/3/Foxp3 axis

Regulatory T cells, and to certain extent other T cell subsets, limit the immune response to avoid harmful inflammation and tissue damage. Here authors identify a surface molecule, Lrig1, that is directly responsible for the suppressive function in regulatory T cells and in Il-17-producing helper T cells.

High-resolution three-photon biomedical imaging using doped ZnS nanocrystals

The application of three-photon excitation to biomedical imaging is demonstrated by combining the three-photon excitation properties of ZnS nanocrystals and the visible emission from Mn²⁺ dopants. The biocompatible, doped nanocrystals are used for high-resolution cellular imaging and in vivo tumour-targeting imaging under non-invasive conditions.

Zinc-dependent regulation of zinc import and export genes by Zur

Zinc homeostasis in most bacteria is achieved by a set of regulators, each responding to a certain level of intracellular zinc. Here the authors show that, inStreptomyces coelicolor, the Zur regulator modulates the expression of genes for zinc import and export over a large range of zinc concentrations.

Loss of MIG-6 results in endometrial progesterone resistance via ERBB2

Female subfertility is highly associated with endometriosis. Here the authors show that progesterone-induced MIG-6 is reduced in endometrium of infertile women and non-human primates with endometriosis, and in a mouse model find that Erbb2 is the key mediator of Mig-6 loss induced endometriosis-related infertility.
