Fast and bright spontaneous emission of Er³⁺ ions in metallic nanocavity

The Purcell effect predicts a spontaneous emission rate enhancement of several orders of magnitude, but experimental demonstrations have been much lower. Here, Song et al. show emission enhancement of Er³⁺ions in a metallic nanocavity with a 170 Purcell factor at room temperature and 55% extraction efficiency.

A Purcell-enabled monolayer semiconductor free-space optical modulator

By engineering the plasmonic response of a nanopatterned silver gate electrode, the radiative decay rate of excitons in a tungsten disulfide monolayer can be enhanced via the Purcell effect, creating high modulation efficiencies at room temperature.

Nanoelectromechanical modulation of a strongly-coupled plasmonic dimer

Squeezing light into a nanometer gap offers strong light–matter interaction. Here, the authors develop a nanoelectromechanical system to dynamically control the gap of a plasmonic dimer at nanometer scale, enabling the realization of a light-intensity modulator that operates at high speed and with a low power consumption.

Quantitative phase contrast imaging with a nonlocal angle-selective metasurface

The authors present an approach to phase imaging by using the non-local optical response of a guided-moderesonator metasurface. They demonstrate that this metasurface can be added to a conventional microscope to enable quantitative phase contrast imaging.

Off-axis metasurfaces for folded flat optics

The authors show how concepts from metasurface flat optics and folded optics can be combined to push the limits in miniaturization of optical systems. Such optical systems can be fabricated using low-index materials, opening up a path for large-area fabrication using nanoimprint lithography.
