Wza the translocon for E. coli capsular polysaccharides defines a new class of membrane protein

The X-ray crystal structure of the 340-kDa octamer of Wza, essential for group 1 capsule export in Escherichia coli, is determined. A large portion of Wza is located in the periplasm and the protein contains a large central cavity, through which capsular polysaccharides are translocated.

Cell cycle transition from S-phase to G1 in Caulobacter is mediated by ancestral virulence regulators

The bacterium Caulobacter crescentus divides asymmetrically to generate a replicative stalk cell and a quiescent swarmer cell. Fumeaux et al. show that MucR zinc-finger transcription factors, which regulate virulence in other species, also control re-entry into quiescence in Caulobacter.

Precise timing of transcription by c-di-GMP coordinates cell cycle and morphogenesis in Caulobacter

Bacteria adapt their growth rate to their metabolic status and environmental conditions by modulating the length of their G1 period. Here the authors show that an increase in c-di-GMP concentration modulates the activity of kinase ShkA and transcription factor TacA, thus enabling G1/S transition in Caulobacter.
