Genomic signatures of past and present chromosomal instability in Barrett’s esophagus and early esophageal adenocarcinoma

Genome complexity is a distinguishing feature of advanced cancers in contrast to precancerous conditions. Here, by analysing chromosomal copy-number evolution in early cancers and precancerous lesions of the oesophagus, the authors reveal signatures of ongoing chromosomal instability and its role in promoting tumour progression.

Adam Bass, Gad Getz, Scott Carter and colleagues report the whole-exome sequences of 25 pairs of esophageal adenocarcinoma and Barrett's esophagus. They identify two pathways by which Barrett's esophagus can develop into esophageal adenocarcinoma.
