  • Latitudinal ecosystem boundaries in the global upper ocean may be driven by many factors. Here the authors investigate pole-to-pole eukaryotic phytoplankton metatranscriptomes, gene co-expression networks, and beta diversity, finding that geographic patterns are best explained by temperature gradients.

  • The performance of organic semiconductor devices depends heavily on molecular parameters. Here, Schwarze et al. point out that the molecular quadrupole moment largely influences device energy levels and show how quadrupole moments can reduce the energy barrier for charge generation in solar cells.

  • TFG-1 is identified as a regulator of COPII coat assembly that interacts with SEC-16 to control protein exit from the endoplasmic reticulum. TFG–kinase fusion proteins have been detected in some cancers and might promote oncogenesis by prematurely phosphorylating target substrates as they exit the endoplasmic reticulum.
