Adenine oligomer directed synthesis of chiral gold nanoparticles

Chiral plasmonic nanoparticles are of great interest in nanotechnology. Here, the authors demonstrate chiral shape guidance by single-stranded oligonucleotides during particle growth based on sequence-specific hydrogen bonding within the strand.

Cyclic two-step electrolysis for stable electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to formate

Reduction of carbon dioxide is promising for the production of value-added chemicals, but electrocatalysts are hindered by carbon monoxide poisoning. Here, the authors alternate reduction and oxidation potentials to achieve stable and selective long-term electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to formate.

Circularly polarized light-sensitive, hot electron transistor with chiral plasmonic nanoparticles

One challenge with using circularly polarized light is an increased device complexity typically required to provide sufficient sensitivity to the polarization. Here, by integrating chiral plasmonic nanoparticles with a InGaZnO hot electron transistor, the authors present a polarization sensitive, optically active transistor.

Airway epithelial CD47 plays a critical role in inducing influenza virus-mediated bacterial super-infection

During the influenza pandemic, a large number of deaths resulted from secondary bacterial pneumonia caused by common upper respiratory tract bacteria, such as Staphylococcus. Here, Moon et al, find that the interaction between airway epithelial CD47 and the pathogenic bacterial FnBP is critical in causing bacterial superinfection.

Enantioselective sensing by collective circular dichroism

An array of 2D crystals of isotropic, 432-symmetric chiral gold nanoparticles is shown to exhibit collective resonances with a strong and uniform chiral near field, allowing enantioselective detection by the collective circular dichroism.
