  • Functional roles of interneurons in regulating the gain of place-tuned neurons are not fully understood. Here, the authors show that VIP neurons fine-tune brain circuits like amplifiers in electronics, using gain modulation to boost spatial signals. This effect enhances navigation signals in the neocortex but not the hippocampus, revealing region-specific control of information flow.

  • Despite evidence that astrocytes mediate sleep-dependent function, the involved signaling mechanisms are unknown. The authors show that astrocytic Ca2+ signalling exhibits distinct features across the sleep-wake cycle and ablation of this Ca2+ signalling pathway impairs slow wave sleep.

  • Physical exercise promotes brain angiogenesis through an unknown signalling cascade. Morlandet al. identify the elusive muscle-brain communication and show that lactate produced by muscle activity binds to its receptor HCAR1 in brain vessel-surrounding cells, stimulating VEGF production and brain angiogenesis.
