The systemic lupus erythematosus-associated NCF1^90H allele synergizes with viral infection to cause mouse lupus but also limits virus spread

The induction of autoimmune symptoms may require both endogenous and exogenous cues. Here the authors show that a single nucleotide polymorphism in the NCF1 gene, NCF1R90H, known to be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus synergizes with mouse norovirus virus infection to promote interferon and toll-like receptor signaling to cause lupus symptoms in mice.

Polymorphic estrogen receptor binding site causes Cd2-dependent sex bias in the susceptibility to autoimmune diseases

The Cia21 locus on chromosome 3 has been associated with rheumatoid arthritis severity in females. Here the authors show this locus houses a non-coding polymorphic estrogen receptor binding site and how it regulates neighbouring gene expression of CD2, implicating CD2 signalling in the sexual dimorphism of a variety of T cell-dependent autoimmune diseases.

Regulation of autoantibody activity by the IL-23–T_H17 axis determines the onset of autoimmune disease

Krönke and colleagues show that the cytokine IL-23 controls the glycosylation profile and inflammatory activity of autoantibodies through control of sialyltransferase activity in plasma cells mediated by the T_H17 subset of helper T cells.
