Miniature supernova shock waves

A laser–plasma experiment has recreated shock waves in collisionless, weakly magnetized conditions and evidenced electron acceleration to relativistic energies, offering unprecedented insight into a long-standing problem in astrophysics.

Growth of concomitant laser-driven collisionless and resistive electron filamentation instabilities over large spatiotemporal scales

In the interaction of ultraintense, short laser pulses with solid targets, the collisionless Weibel instability is observed. For a sufficiently high resistivity of the target, an additional resistive instability appears.

Global assessment of marine plastic exposure risk for oceanic birds

Petrels are wide-ranging, highly threatened seabirds that often ingest plastic. This study used tracking data for 7,137 petrels of 77 species to map global exposure risk and compare regions, species, and populations. The results show higher exposure risk for threatened species and stress the need for international cooperation to tackle marine litter.

Self-generated surface magnetic fields inhibit laser-driven sheath acceleration of high-energy protons

Guiding of relativistic electron beams in dense matter by laser-driven magnetostatic fields

Efficient energy transport by laser-driven relativistic electron beams is crucial in many applications including inertial confinement fusion, and particle acceleration. Here the authors demonstrate relativistic electron beam guiding in dense plasma with an externally imposed high magnetic field.

Global phenological insensitivity to shifting ocean temperatures among seabirds

Time of reproduction may be altered as the climate changes. For seabirds, it is shown that there has not been an adjustment in timing as the climate changes and the sea surface warms. This lack of plasticity could result in a mismatch with food resources.

Laboratory investigation of particle acceleration and magnetic field compression in collisionless colliding fast plasma flows

Ion production and acceleration is ubiquitous in astrophysical objects but many questions still remain on the mechanisms at play and while laboratory plasmas provide an “accessible” regime, non-thermal ion acceleration has not been observed in the laboratory before the advent of high-power lasers. The authors collide two relativistic plasma flows and observe large energy difference of the protons coming out of the interaction region with or without an external magnetic field, qualitatively corroborating their 1D and 2D particle-in-cell simulations.
