Current-induced switching in a magnetic insulator

Spin-current-induced magnetization reversal of a perpendicularly magnetized thulium iron garnet film is reported. The spin current is driven by the current flowing through a Pt overlayer.

Non-volatile electric-field control of inversion symmetry

Electric fields typically break symmetry when applied as a stimulus to materials. Here, by forming a superlattice of BiFeO₃ and TbScO₃, it is shown that an electric field can repeatedly stabilize mixed-phase polar and antipolar BiFeO₃.

Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction arising from rare-earth orbital magnetism in insulating magnetic oxides

The origin of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) in insulating magnetic oxides remains unclear. Here, Caretta et al. find that an intrinsic spin-orbit coupling due to rare-earth orbital magnetism generates iDMI at mirror symmetry-breaking interfaces of magnetized iron garnets Tm₃Fe₅O₁₂.

Fast current-driven domain walls and small skyrmions in a compensated ferrimagnet

Non-volatile magnon transport in a single domain multiferroic

La-substitution in BiFeO₃ enables an electric field-driven conversion of a multi-domain into a single ferroelectric domain accompanied by a single variant spin cycloid. A single domain multiferroic generates 400% larger non-local inverse spin Hall voltage at the output.

Field-free deterministic ultrafast creation of magnetic skyrmions by spin–orbit torques

The deterministic nucleation of single skyrmions at a controlled position along multilayered magnetic racetracks is demonstrated by exploiting spin-orbit torques without the need of in-plane magnetic fields.
