Understanding the emergence of complexity during self-assembly of simple molecular building blocks is key for advances in synthetic control. Here, the authors identify and characterize the spontaneous formation of a complex Kagome lattice of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,4,5- trimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin molecules on Ag(111) substrate based on two unique site-selective conformational adaptations, and discuss the role of the adsorbate-adsorbent interface in driving the system towards thermodynamic equilibrium.
