Loss of the PTEN protein, an event that activates PI3K/AKT signaling, in neurons enables axon regeneration. Now Leibinger et al show in retinal ganglion cells and during optic nerve regeneration in mice, that this is mediated by inactivation of the AKT substrate GSK3, which in turn releases axonal CRMP2 from GSK3-mediatated inhibition.
