Plasmodesmata channel substance transportation between neighbouring cells, including the sieve tube elements and the phloem companion cells. Now, the plasmodesmal ultrastructure is shown to be regulated by a newly identified phloem unloading modulator that participates in sphingolipid biosynthesis in Arabidopsis.
