Pin1 converts proteins into cis or trans conformations — the amyloid precursor protein (APP) being one of Pin1's targets. This encounter limits the processing of APP into amyloid-β , the peptide that builds up in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. The results also suggest that APP in its cis conformation supports amyloidogenic APP processing, whereas the trans conformation does not.
