Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a prominent example of the role of magnetic fields in medical diagnostics, and improved spatial and temporal resolution is a constant goal. Here, the authors propose the use of ellipsoidal harmonics for magnetic field mapping in MRI and show that they can be used to efficiently measure and represent magnetic fields.
