General rule for the energy of water-induced traps in organic semiconductors

Hole and electron traps related to the presence of trace water are found in organic semiconductor thin films, at an energy offset of ~0.3–0.4 eV from the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, respectively.

π-Extended perylene diimide double-heterohelicenes as ambipolar organic semiconductors for broadband circularly polarized light detection

In organic semiconducting molecules materials, distorted π-systems enable strong coupling with circular polarized light while planar π-stacking systems are necessary for high charge-carrier mobility. Here, the authors address this dilemma by introducing a skeleton merging approach through distortion of a perylene diimide core with four fused heteroaromatics to form a π-extended double helicene.

Mutation load at a mimicry supergene sheds new light on the evolution of inversion polymorphisms

Chromosomal inversions at the mimicry locus of Heliconius numata butterflies accumulate deleterious variants. This leads to selection against homozygosity, in opposition to positive selection for mimicry, resulting in intermediate allele frequency.

A switchable self-assembling and disassembling chiral system based on a porphyrin-substituted phenylalanine–phenylalanine motif

Artificial light-harvesting systems cannot self-assemble into photon-capturing structures that can reversibly switch into an inactive state. Here, the authors describe a simple and robust dipeptide construct which self-assembles to fibrils, platelets or nanospheres with varying optical properties.

The histone H4 Lys 20 methyltransferase PR-Set7 regulates replication origins in mammalian cells

The methyltransferase PR-Set7 catalyses the methylation of Histone H4 on Lys 20. This methylation mark is now found to correlate with replication-origin licensing. Expression of a non-degradable PR-Set7 mutant leads to retention of this mark and repeated DNA replication at origins.
