The shape of watersheds

River networks worldwide follow the emblematic Hack’s Law, which expresses the length of a stream as a function of its watershed area. Here the authors show this law does not depend on lithology or rainfall, but on the shape of watersheds and confirms the self-similarity of river networks.

DNA methylation protects cancer cells against senescence

Using degron approaches, the authors show that cancer cells experiencing prolonged DNA methylation loss—without substantial DNA damage—undergo non-canonical senescence. This has important potential implications for cancer treatment.

CBP-HSF2 structural and functional interplay in Rubinstein-Taybi neurodevelopmental disorder

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with unclear underlying mechanisms. Here, the authors unravel the contribution of a stress-responsive pathway to RSTS where impaired HSF2 acetylation, due to RSTS-associated CBP/EP300 mutations, alters the expression of neurodevelopmental players, in keeping with hallmarks of cell-cell adhesion defects.

Surface rupture and shallow fault reactivation during the 2019 Mw 4.9 Le Teil earthquake, France

The 2019 Le Teil earthquake in southern France reactivated an existing fault and ruptured the surface, according to field, seismic and InSAR observations. The incredibly shallow hypocenter can explain the effects of the moderate Mw 4.9 event.
