This work investigates the origin of time delay in strong field tunneling ionization and its relation to the parameters of the photoelectron wavepacket. The authors establish a general analytical relationship between the phase of the wavepacket and the tunneling rate, and analyze the role of under-the-barrier recollisions for shaping the photoelectron wavepacket.
