IKKβ phosphorylation regulates RPS3 nuclear translocation and NF-κB function during infection with Escherichia coli strain O157:H7

The NF-κB subunit RPS3 can contribute to the selection of nuclear targets by NF-κB. Lenardo and colleagues show that the kinase IκBβ phosphorylates RPS3 to promote its nuclear translocation, a process targeted by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli.

The ephrin receptor tyrosine kinase A2 is a cellular receptor for Kaposi's sarcoma–associated herpesvirus

Kaposi's sarcoma–associated herpesvirus (KSHV) can infect endothelial cells, leading to the development of Kaposi's sarcoma in some individuals. The mechanisms underlying cell entry by KSHV are not fully elucidated. ahn et al. now report that ephrin receptor tyrosine kinase A2 (EphA2) acts as a cellular receptor for KSHV and show that blocking EphA2 inhibits infection of endothelial cells.

Trodusquemine displaces protein misfolded oligomers from cell membranes and abrogates their cytotoxicity through a generic mechanism

Limbocker et al. show that trodusquemine, an aminosterol, reduces the cytotoxicity of protein misfolded oligomers by displacing them from cell membranes in the absence of any overt structural/ morphological changes in them. This mechanism appears to be general, as they test it for oligomers of αS, Aβ and the model protein HypF-N to human neuroblastoma cells.

Ethylmalonic encephalopathy is an autosomal recessive developmental disorder that is characterized by chronic diarrhea and multiple neurological deficits. It is associated with loss-of-function mutations in the ETHE1 gene. Now, Massimo Zeviani and his colleagues report that ETHE1 is a dioxygenase that is responsible for breaking down toxic sulfide in a variety of organs.
