Identification of p62/SQSTM1 as a component of non-canonical Wnt VANGL2–JNK signalling in breast cancer

Defects in non-canonical Wnt/planar cell polarity signalling have recently been linked to breast cancer aggressiveness. Puvirajesinghe et al. identify VANGL2, p62/SQSTM1 and JNK as important players in this pathway which may be amenable to therapeutic intervention in breast cancer.

Linking E-cadherin mechanotransduction to cell metabolism through force-mediated activation of AMPK

Bays et al. demonstrate that application of force to E-cadherin leads to LKB1-dependent activation of AMPK and recruitment of AMPK to E-cadherin complexes to increase glucose uptake and ATP production and re-enforce cell–cell junctions.

Primary cilia regulate mTORC1 activity and cell size through Lkb1

The mTOR pathway is a well-known regulator of cell size, and deregulation of mTOR has been observed in cilia-related diseases. Cilia modulate cell size by restricting LKB-1-mediated activation of AMPK to the basal body, which subsequently affects mTOR signalling.
