An amphiphilic copolymer-based marine antifouling coating with zwitterionic sulfobetaine and hydrophobic trifluoroethyl pendants is developed. Copolymers with controlled compositions, molecular weights, and configurations are synthesized for use in coatings. Notably, the random copolymers, balancing hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, significantly reduce diatom adhesion, even in the presence of marine sediments, outperforming block copolymer analogs.
