  • The discovery of water vapour and ice particles erupting from Saturn's moon Enceladus fuelled speculation that an internal ocean was the source. The presence of sodium chloride is expected in a long-lived ocean in contact with a rocky core; however, a ground-based spectroscopic search for atomic sodium near Enceladus now places an upper limit on the mixing ratio in the vapour plumes orders of magnitude below expected ocean salinity. These observations are consistent with a variety of alternative eruption sources including a deep ocean, a freshwater reservoir, or ice.

  • Planetary aurorae are formed by energetic charged particles streaming along the planet's magnetic field lines into the upper atmosphere from the surrounding space environment. At Saturn only the main auroral oval has been observed, but this paper reports the discovery of a secondary oval, ∼25 per cent as bright as the main oval.

  • Rebecca Fitzgerald and colleagues used genome sequence analyses to study the progression from premalignant Barrett's esophagus to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) and found that the majority of recurrently mutated genes in EAC were also mutated in precursor lesions and that only mutations in TP53 and SMAD4 were stage specific.
