Blood methylome signatures in children exposed to maternal type 1 diabetes are linked to protection against islet autoimmunity

Through an epigenome-wide blood analysis in children of mothers with or without type 1 diabetes, the authors identify epigenetic modifications of type 1 diabetes susceptibility loci through which maternal type 1 diabetes may protect from islet autoimmunity in offspring.

Genetics of circulating proteins in newborn babies at high risk of type 1 diabetes

Early detection of type 1 diabetes can facilitate early intervention. Here, the authors present a pQTL map in newborns and integrate it with genetic data to identifiy proteins that may play a causal role in the development of type 1 diabetes.

Hypomethylation of multiple imprinted loci in individuals with transient neonatal diabetes is associated with mutations in ZFP57

Deborah Mackay and colleagues identify mutations in ZFP57, encoding a zinc-finger transcription factor, in families with transient neonatal diabetes and additional clinical features. Affected individuals have a variable pattern of DNA hypomethylation at multiple imprinted loci.

Transatlantic differences in the management of T2DM in youth

If a child has diabetic keotacidosis and the type of diabetes mellitus is unclear, immediately start them on insulin. This recommendation is one of a number from a recent guideline on paediatric type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, differences in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus between the USA and Europe remain.
