Inherited geochemical diversity of 3.4 Ga organic films from the Buck Reef Chert, South Africa

Information on the initial chemical nature of Archean organic materials can survive in rocks despite a complex geological history, according to spatially resolved chemical analyses of 3.4-billion-year old organic films.

Graphite formation by carbonate reduction during subduction

Carbon is carried into the Earth at subduction zones. Geochemical analysis of subducted sediments now exhumed in Alpine Corsica, France, reveal the formation of graphite during shallow subduction, implying that carbonate transformation to graphite aids transport into the deeper Earth.

Efficient organic carbon burial in the Bengal fan sustained by the Himalayan erosional system

A comprehensive organic carbon budget for the Himalayan erosional system is presented, and finds that organic carbon export is controlled by sediment properties and that oxidative loss is negligible during transport and deposition to the ocean. The results indicate that 70 to 85 per cent of the organic carbon is recent organic matter captured during transport, which serves as a net sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide.
