Nuocytes represent a new innate effector leukocyte that mediates type-2 immunity

Here, a new type of innate effector leukocyte cell — the nuocyte — is described and characterized. It is shown that interleukin (IL)25 and IL33 drive the expansion of the nuocyte population, that these cells secrete IL13, and that they are required for protection against helminth infection.

PD-L1- and IL-4-expressing basophils promote pathogenic accumulation of T follicular helper cells in lupus

Basophils have been implicated in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), as evidenced by the fact that basophil-deficient mice do not develop the disease. Here, the authors demonstrate that PD-L1 and IL-4 expression in basophils promotes the pathogenic accumulation of follicular helper T cells in patients with SLE and murine models.

The alarmin IL-33 promotes regulatory T-cell function in the intestine

The alarmin interleukin-33 is constitutively expressed at barrier sites and released in response to tissue damage; here, the IL-33 receptor ST2 is shown to be preferentially expressed on colonic regulatory T cells, where it promotes regulatory T-cell function and adaptation to the inflammatory tissue environment.

Elevated IL-33 levels have been correlated with metastasis and poor prognosis. Here the authors show in mouse tumour xenograft models that PDGF-BB produced by tumour cells induces IL-33 via Sox7 in tumour pericytes, and IL-33 promotes metastasis through its effects on tumour-associated macrophages.
