Natural variation of OsWRKY23 drives difference in nitrate use efficiency between indica and japonica rice

Rice indica varieties have higher nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) than that of japonica varieties. Here, the authors show that natural variation of OsWRKY23 and its interaction with DULL NITROGEN RESPONSE1 (DNR1)-mediated auxin accumulation play a role in NUE divergence between the two rice subspecies.

Natural variation in timing of stress-responsive gene expression predicts heterosis in intraspecific hybrids of Arabidopsis

The genetic distance between parents influences hybrid performance in plants. Here Miller et al. show that Arabidopsishybrids produced from diverse parental ecotypes have reduced expression of stress responsive genes at certain times of the day and this correlates with greater biomass production.

Frequent mutations of genes encoding ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis pathway components in clear cell renal cell carcinoma

Huanming Yang, Zhiming Cai, Jun Wang and colleagues report whole-exome sequencing of 10 clear cell renal cell carcinomas followed by a screen of ~1,100 genes in a total of 98 tumors. They found 12 new disease-associated genes and detected frequent alterations in the ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis pathway.

Concerted genomic and epigenomic changes accompany stabilization of Arabidopsis allopolyploids

Arabidopsis suecica is an allotetraploid derived from Arabidopsis thaliana and Arabidopsis arenosa. Analysis of resynthesized and natural allotetraploid A. suecica shows balanced genomic variation accompanied by convergent and concerted changes in DNA methylation and gene expression between two subgenomes that probably contributed to genome stability during polyploid evolution.
