Twisting, untwisting, and retwisting of elastic Co-based nanohelices

The reversible transformation of a nanohelix is one of the most exquisite and important phenomenon in nature but nanomaterials usually fail to twist into helical crystals or untwist. Here, the authors report a reciprocal effect between molecular geometry and crystal structure which triggers a twisting-untwisting-retwisting cycle for tri-cobalt salicylate hydroxide hexahydrate.

Synthetic carbon-based lanthanide upconversion nanoparticles for enhanced photothermal therapy

Photothermal therapy using photo agents developed with high photothermal conversion efficiency under long-wavelength laser irradiation has been investigated in preclinical cancer treatment. Here this group reports coating mesoporous carbon nanomaterials with a lanthanide oxysulfide up-conversion material (Y₂O₂S:Yb³⁺, Er³⁺) with tumor targeting capability for in situ ocular melanoma tumor treatment.

The draft genome of the transgenic tropical fruit tree papaya (Carica papaya Linnaeus)

Researchers from Hawaii and an international consortium have produced a draft genome assembly for 'SunUp', the first commercial virus-resistant transgenic fruit tree. Comparison of this plant genome to those of Arabidopsis and others sheds light on evolution of characteristics such as biosynthesis, starch deposition, control of photosynthesis and pathways for creating volatile compounds.

Metallic 2M or 1T′-phase transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are characterized by interesting properties, but they are metastable.
