Agrobacterium expressing a type III secretion system delivers Pseudomonas effectors into plant cells to enhance transformation

Agrobacterium infection can cause defense responses in many plants, which leads to transformation recalcitrance. Here, the authors express type III secretion system in Agrobacterium to deliver effector proteins into plant cells to suppress host defense responses and thus enhance transformation in some plant species.

Unprecedented lattice volume expansion on doping stereochemically active Pb²⁺ into uniaxially strained structure of CaBa_1−xPb_xZn₂Ga₂O₇

Lone pair cations can impart interesting features in some structures, such as noncentrosymmetry. Here the authors show unexpected cell volume expansion in a polar “114”-type oxide upon replacing Ba²⁺ with a smaller Pb²⁺, and attribute it to high stereochemical activity of Pb²⁺ with the strained framework.

Tunable thermal expansion in framework materials through redox intercalation

The positive thermal expansion exhibited by most materials at increased temperatures is a severe issue for many high precision applications. Here, Xing and co-workers show that redox intercalation of Li ions into a ScF₃framework offers effective control of the thermal expansion for this simple material.
