A single mutation may contribute to accelerated evolution of SARS-CoV-2 toward Omicron

Drivers of viral evolution in SARS-CoV-2 are insufficiently understood. In this study, the authors show how a key SARS-CoV-2 mutation, NSP4 T492I, is potentially responsible for accelerating genome evolution to develop adaptive variants (e.g. Omicron).

Direct evidence of secondary reconnection inside filamentary currents of magnetic flux ropes during magnetic reconnection

Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma process of magnetic energy conversion to kinetic energy. Here, the authors show direct evidence of secondary reconnection in the filamentary currents within the flux ropes indicating a significant contribution to energy conversion in the kinetic scale during turbulent reconnection.

Coalescence of magnetic flux ropes in the ion diffusion region of magnetic reconnection

Merging magnetic flux ropes, which are believed to play an important role in magnetic reconnection, have now been clearly identified. Observations show that coalescence is indeed closely related to reconnection dynamics and also to turbulence.

Magnetotail reconnection onset caused by electron kinetics with a strong external driver

Magnetotail reconnection plays a crucial role in explosive energy conversion in geospace. Here, the authors show that magnetotail reconnection starts from electron reconnection in the presence of a strong external driver, which then develops into ion reconnection.

Direct observation of turbulent magnetic reconnection in the solar wind

Solar wind observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission reveal bursty, turbulent properties within a reconnection diffusion region, in contrast with the usual quasi-steady state of solar wind reconnection. Between October 2017 and May 2019 75 other similar events were identified, indicating the relevance of turbulent reconnection in the solar wind.
