Vibrio cholerae O139 genomes provide a clue to why it may have failed to usher in the eighth cholera pandemic

The O139 Vibrio cholerae serogroup emerged in the 1990s and spread rapidly but did not become globally dominant. Here, the authors describe the genomic epidemiology of this strain and identify changes in virulence and antimicrobial resistance characteristics that they hypothesise may have contributed to its decline.

Genomic evidence of two-staged transmission of the early seventh cholera pandemic

The seventh cholera pandemic spread across the globe in three waves from 1961. Here, the authors sequence 22 genomes from 1961 to 1979 and show that the first wave of the pandemic occurred in two distinct stages with different geographic and genomic characteristics.

Shigella sonnei is one of the main species causing shigellosis worldwide. Here the authors analyse nearly 400 S. sonnei genome sequences and carry out experimental evolution experiments to shed light into the evolutionary processes underlying the recent emergence of fluoroquinolone resistance in this pathogen.
