Branconi et al. report on an experimental approach to investigate the ecological and social drivers of cooperative breeding in clownfish. Experiments were performed on a wild population in Papua New Guinea and indicate that clownfish non-breeding strategies can be understood using economic bargaining theory and cooperative breeding theory.
